Sydney

About the city

Lots of jobs. Long inspection queues.

Sydney is Australia's economic capital. Banks, consultancies and tech companies cluster here, so you get the widest job market and the highest salaries. The trade-off is housing: median house rent hit a record A$850 a week, units A$780 (Domain, June quarter 2026).

The city wraps around its harbour and beaches: from Bondi to Manly you can live by the ocean and work in the CBD. Trains, metro and ferries run under a weekly Opal cap of A$50, keeping the outer suburbs genuinely connected.

Parramatta

Western Sydney's business hub: offices, a university and fast trains to the centre. Plenty of new housing keeps rents softer than harbourside.

Blacktown

One of the most affordable major hubs with fast trains. Big houses for reasonable money, popular with families.

multicultural

Cabramatta

Cheap rent and the city's best Asian food. A good base while you look around and job-hunt.

Sydney questions

Median asking rent is A$780 a week for a unit and A$850 for a house (Domain, June quarter 2026). Both are records and the highest among Australian capitals.

A guide for a couple is A$2,000–2,500 a week before tax combined: a unit takes A$780, the rest goes to food, transport (up to A$50 each), insurance and savings. National average full-time earnings are A$2,051 a week (ABS).

Look at western hubs with fast trains (Parramatta, Blacktown) or multicultural areas like Cabramatta. Rents are noticeably softer than near the beaches, and the commute is usually 30–45 minutes.
