Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Campbell Street bridge~15 min at the stop

The Matrix calls this overpass the Adam Street Bridge. Neo steps out to meet Morpheus here. The shot is the Campbell Street and Elizabeth Street crossing in Haymarket, looking north along Castlereagh Street.

Worth knowing: The Matrix interiors were filmed at Fox Studios in Moore Park. The city streets were kept for the chases and this bridge.

Tip: Stay on the footpath. Traffic crosses the bridge. Elizabeth Street north reaches Martin Place in about 20 minutes.

  2. 2. 52 Martin Place~10 min at the stop

The tower on the Elizabeth Street corner. In The Matrix it is the government building where Agent Smith holds Morpheus.

Worth knowing: During the 1998 shoot the tower was the Colonial State Bank Centre.

Tip: The facade reads from the corner of Elizabeth Street and Martin Place. It is a working office. People go in on business.

  3. 3. Lloyd Rees Fountain~20 min at the stop

The wall of water on pedestrian Martin Place at Pitt Street. In The Matrix, Neo's training is interrupted here by the woman in red. Superman Returns sets Kitty's car down on this corner. In 2023 the street was closed for the chases in The Fall Guy.

Worth knowing: The fountain opened on 16 December 1976. The artist Lloyd Rees turned the key, and the water started in his honour.

Tip: On a weekday the square is still empty from 8:00 to 9:00, then the offices fill it. The water falls as a wall.

  4. 4. The Westin, 1 Martin Place~10 min at the stop

The former General Post Office. In The Matrix this hall is the ambush on Neo's crew, and a black cat marks the deja vu.

Worth knowing: James Barnet designed the post office. The colonnade and the clock tower were finished in 1891.

Tip: The columns and the clock face Martin Place. The hotel entrance is on the square.

  5. 5. Pitt and Hunter~10 min at the stop

The end of The Matrix: Neo calls the machines from this corner. Superman Returns sets a street fire here, and the camera rides up the Radisson front on O'Connell Street.

Worth knowing: The booth in the final scene stood in front of the Citibank building. It had been removed by 2016.

Tip: Stand on the southeast corner, facing the Citibank building. The booth has been taken off the footpath. The crossing is the spot.

  8. 8. Dawes Point~20 min at the stop

The lawn under the Harbour Bridge. In The Fall Guy, Gosling was dragged along the traffic lanes, and the bridge was closed for a few hours. From the lawn the arch and the Opera House sit in one frame.

Tip: The pedestrian path on the east side of the bridge is free. Stay off the traffic lanes where the stunt ran. The boat in Mission: Impossible 2 goes under the bridge toward Bradleys Head. The house there was a set and was taken down. The headland is still a lookout.

Worth knowing: Before the films, Paul Hogan worked on the painting of the Harbour Bridge. The opening shot of Dundee has that same bridge in the window.

Tip: The building is apartments now. From the footpath the bridge shows over the wharf roofs. Leave the apartments private.

  10. 10. Sydney Opera House~25 min at the stop

The steps and the forecourt in front of the sails. The Fall Guy finale and the boat chase land here. Mission: Impossible 2 opens with a flight over the building.

Worth knowing: The Fall Guy had its world premiere in Sydney on 8 April 2024. The steps were filmed the season before, in 2022 and 2023.

Tip: The forecourt is free to walk. A ticket is for a hall inside. Eat at Opera Bar on the lower concourse: Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 until late, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to midnight, no bookings. As a separate drive: the Boat Harbour dunes at Kurnell, about an hour south, are the Metalstorm desert in The Fall Guy and part of Furiosa. North Narrabeen beach was a Fall Guy set too. The Matrix interiors and The Great Gatsby were filmed at the studio that is now Disney Studios Australia, on Driver Avenue in Moore Park. Visitors are not admitted to the stages. The Entertainment Quarter next door is open.

  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
