Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Single O: the opening flat white~30 min at the stop

One of Sydney's original specialty roasters (2003): the place to understand why Australians refuse chain coffee.

Tip: The café at 60-64 Reservoir Street opens 7am to 3:30pm on weekdays and 8am to 3pm on weekends. Next door the Sideshow brew bar does takeaway pour-over, cold brew or the single-origin espresso of the week.

  2. 2. Reuben Hills: Latin brunch~45 min at the stop

Roastery-brunch since 2012: baja fish tacos and a benedict people cross the city for.

Tip: 61 Albion Street: weekdays 7am to 3:30pm, weekends 7:30am to 3:30pm. Walk-ins only, but the queue moves fast.

  3. 3. Bourke Street Bakery: the sausage roll~20 min at the stop

The bakery opened in winter 2004 as a tiny shop on the corner of Bourke and Devonshire Streets and now has outlets all over Sydney. The original is still at 633 Bourke Street: get the pork and fennel sausage roll without thinking twice.

Tip: The ginger brûlée tart is the underrated hero of the cabinet.

  4. 4. Porteño: open-fire asado~1 h 30 min at the stop

The Argentinian grill since 2010, #20 on the world steak list. A late lunch here is the crawl's main event.

Tip: No booking? Arrive at the noon open: full by 1 pm.

  5. 5. Spice Alley: the Asian finale~1 h at the stop

Lanterns over Kensington Street and a dozen stalls: Singaporean, Malaysian, Thai, Cantonese, Korean and Japanese food, plus the Gin Lane bar. A light dinner if the asado left any room.

Tip: Open Sunday to Wednesday 11am to 9:30pm, Thursday to Saturday until 10pm. Seating is shared: order from several stalls and share.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
