Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Observatory Hill~20 min at the stop

A quiet lawn by the 19th-century observatory above the Harbour Bridge's western flank: the best free bridge view in sunset light.

Worth knowing: The observatory was built in 1857–1859 on the site of an old fort and windmills. Visitors still look through its 1874 refractor, the oldest telescope in regular use in Australia.

Tip: Claim a bench twenty minutes before sunset. Locals know this spot.

  2. 2. Barangaroo Reserve~30 min at the stop

A six-hectare headland reclaimed from a concrete container terminal: 75,000 native plants and sandstone blocks right at the waterline.

Tip: Climb Stargazer Lawn. The whole park and harbour spread out below.

  3. 3. Wulugul Walk waterfront~45 min at the stop

The promenade tracing the 1836 shoreline links Walsh Bay to Darling Harbour. Water on one side, Barangaroo's restaurant strip on the other.

Tip: Dinner is at Smoke, Barangaroo House, 35 Barangaroo Avenue. Closed on Monday. Tuesday to Thursday 15:00 to midnight, Friday and Saturday until 01:00, Sunday until 23:00. Book for a Friday.

  4. 4. King Street Wharf~30 min at the stop

A run of bars and brewhouses beside moored yachts. The liveliest stretch of the evening waterfront. Good spot for an aperitif.

Tip: This stretch is loud and pricey. If you do not need a waterfront table, keep walking to the bridge.

  5. 5. Pyrmont Bridge~10 min at the stop

The 1902 pedestrian swing bridge across Cockle Bay. From mid-span, skyscraper lights shimmer in the water on both sides.

Tip: The bridge sometimes swings open for yachts. Wait it out. The gap is a few minutes.

  6. 6. Darling Harbour & Tumbalong Park~30 min at the stop

The finale: lit fountains, buskers and dessert cafes ringing the bay. Easy exit too: light rail and metro stations are five minutes away.

Worth knowing: The playground opened in 2011 on the old Sega World site. The 21 metre flying fox is still the main event.

Tip: The Tumbalong lawn works with children. Darling Quarter playground is right beside it, and it is free.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
