Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Audley Weir~1 h at the stop

The weir on the Hacking River: boats, a lawn and the start of the quiet tracks. Locals come for the day, not a half-hour photo stop.

Tip: Hire a rowboat or kayak from the Audley Boatshed if you are not walking. Waterside tables go early. Audley Dance Hall Cafe, 2 Lady Carrington Drive, opens daily 8:30am to 4pm (weekend hours can be longer) and sells takeaway sandwiches for the trail. There is no other kitchen further in.

  2. 2. Lady Carrington Drive~1 h 10 min at the stop

The old forest road along the river, almost flat. Lyrebirds come onto the track if you walk quietly and not in a pack.

Tip: You do not need all 10 km. An hour out and back is already the forest and the river.

  3. 3. Wattamolla~50 min at the stop

A lagoon and the ocean in one cove. In summer people swim the lagoon when the sea is messy. Bondi is a long way from this.

Tip: On weekends the car park dies by noon. Swim only where it is calm.

  4. 4. Jibbon engravings~1 h 15 min at the stop

The track out of Bundeena village to figures cut into the sandstone above the ocean. This is Dharawal country, not a viewing deck.

Tip: Stay on the marked track and off the cliff edge. You can leave by ferry from Bundeena to Cronulla.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
