How eating works here

Bookings, tips, surcharges: how it works here

Six things worth knowing before your first dinner. Checked against official sources, July 2026.

Cafés live until 3 pm

The Australian café is a morning genre: kitchens wind down by 2:30–3 pm, and "all-day brunch" means "until early afternoon". Schedule the serious coffee stops for the morning; they are shut by evening.

Bookings vs walk-in

Top restaurants sell out weeks ahead (Attica: months), but almost every room keeps walk-in bar seats. Arrive at open. Cafés and most Asian spots take no bookings at all: the queue is the system.

Tipping is optional

Staff earn a full wage, so tips are not expected: rounding up or ~10% for exceptional table service is a gesture, not a duty. Nobody tips at a counter.

Weekend surcharges

10–15% on weekends and public holidays is legal and common, but it must be printed on the menu. Card surcharges on eftpos, Visa and Mastercard, however, are banned from 1 October 2026 (Reserve Bank of Australia).

BYO: bring your own wine

Many restaurants (especially Melbourne and Sydney) let you bring a bottle for a corkage fee of roughly A$8–30. Confirm when booking. BYO often runs on select nights only.

Water is free by law

Licensed venues must provide free drinking water in most states. Ask for tap water. It will keep coming all evening, and no one considers it poor form.
