Melbourne

About the city

Coffee, laneways, and a softer rent bill

Melbourne consistently sits in the world's top three most liveable cities (EIU 2026: third) while staying the most affordable of Australia's megacities: median rent for both units and houses is about A$600 a week (Domain, June quarter 2026).

It is a city of coffee, laneways, sport and festivals. The weather is famously changeable ("four seasons in a day"), but the cultural life and the free tram zone in the centre make up for it. Until January 2027 all public transport in Victoria is half price.

Suburbs to start in

A newcomer shortlist from renter guides. Editorial picks, not official statistics.

inner west

Footscray

Cheap and close to the centre, with Vietnamese and African markets. Gentrifying fast, so catch it while rents are soft.

rail hub

Sunshine

A rail junction with plenty of affordable housing. The future airport rail link runs through it.

for families

Werribee

Affordable houses, new schools and 35 minutes to the centre by train. A classic family starting point.

Rent · June quarter 2026

A$600 unit, median per week · A$600 house, median per week

A rare case: houses and units cost the same, and growth has paused because renters hit an affordability ceiling (Domain). For bigger families Melbourne is currently the best deal among the megacities.

Work

Healthcare · Tech · Infrastructure · Education · Creative industries

A more diverse economy than Sydney's: strong healthcare, universities, infrastructure megaprojects and a creative sector. Less finance, more of everything else.

Why people love it

  • Third most liveable city in the world (EIU 2026)
  • Rent 20–30% softer than Sydney
  • Culture: festivals, sport, music, coffee
  • Half-price public transport until January 2027

What to brace for

  • Changeable weather and a chilly, windy winter
  • There are beaches, but the water is calmer and colder than Sydney's
  • Salaries average slightly below Sydney's

Melbourne questions

About A$600 a week for both units and houses (Domain, June quarter 2026). Rent growth has stalled, so it is the most affordable of Australia's megacities right now.

If your work is in finance or big tech and you want the ocean, pick Sydney. If budget, culture and family life matter more, pick Melbourne: rents are 20–30% softer, and it ranks higher for liveability (EIU 2026: Melbourne #3, Sydney #4).

A full-fare bank card works on trains, trams and buses in the myki area. A concession still uses myki. Trams in the centre are free. Until 1 January 2027 the full-fare daily cap is A$5.70, half of the usual A$11.40. SkyBus is separate.
