Getting there

The Frankston line ends at Frankston. Bus 788 continues to Sorrento and Portsea and finishes at the Point Nepean gate. A car is the practical way to combine the gondola, the lighthouse and the hot springs. From central Melbourne, allow about 1 hour 15 minutes to Mornington and about 1 hour 45 minutes to Sorrento. The Searoad ferry runs between Sorrento and Queenscliff. Times are on searoad.com.au.

Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Main Street, Mornington~40 min at the stop

The shopping street of the first town on the peninsula: coffee and small shops before the drive south. The pin sits on the street itself.

Tip: Take the coffee to go. Save lunch for Merricks, where a table can be booked.

  2. 2. Merricks Store~1 h 10 min at the stop

The store and kitchen at 3460 Frankston-Flinders Road: local produce, a wine tasting and a table on the verandah.

Worth knowing: The Joyner family built the store in 1922. Since 2008 it has belonged to the Myer and Baillieu families: in spring 1972 Baillieu Myer planted 400 vines at Elgee Park, the peninsula's first commercial vineyard.

Tip: Open every day 8:30 to 17:00. Breakfast until 11:00, lunch 12:00 to 15:30. The coffee window opens at 7:00, until 14:30 on weekdays and until 15:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Dinner is Friday only, 17:30 to 20:00, and it is booked. Phone 03 5989 8088.

  3. 3. Flinders~40 min at the stop

A small village on the ocean. The shops are on Cook Street, and the pier is a few minutes on foot. The pin is the village itself.

Tip: This is a short stop between lunch and Sorrento. On this ocean side, swim only between the flags when a patrol is out.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
