A memorial on the hill at the north edge of town. From the top you see the whole town and the MacDonnell Ranges.

Tip: The climb is short, but come early or at sunset: there is no shade at the top.

  4. 4. Olive Pink Botanic Garden~1 h at the stop

An arid-zone botanic garden across the Todd River at 27 Tuncks Road, with a hill walk and the shady Bean Tree Cafe.

Worth knowing: The garden was founded by Olive Pink, a botanical illustrator and Aboriginal rights campaigner: in 1956 she won reserve status for arid-zone flora and spent two decades growing it with her Warlpiri gardeners.

Tip: The Todd riverbed is usually dry, but after rain cross only by the bridge.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
