Stops in order
The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.
1. Russell Falls~40 min at the stop
Three tiers of water among tree ferns. The track is flat. Arrive before the groups and it is a forest waterfall again, not a viewing platform.
Worth knowing: Russell Falls Reserve was proclaimed in 1885, Tasmania's first reserve. Mount Field became a national park in 1916.
Tip: 1.4 km return from the visitor centre, about 25 minutes, Grade 1. The centre is open daily: 9 am to 4 pm May to October, to 4:15 in November, to 5 pm December to April. Waterfalls Café is in the same building; there's no other food in the park.

2. Horseshoe Falls~25 min at the stop
The next falls up the track, which a lot of people skip. Smaller and quieter, and that is the point.
Tip: Add them straight after Russell Falls. Do not walk back to the car in between.

3. Tall Trees~40 min at the stop
A loop of about a kilometre among giant eucalypts on a damp slope. After two waterfalls it's the same forest at a different scale: you'll be craning your neck at the trunks.
Tip: 1 km loop, about 30 minutes, Grade 2. The boardwalk is slippery in the rain, so take it slowly.

4. The Possum Shed~30 min at the stop
The Westerway cafe on the way back to Hobart. Pie and coffee where locals stop, not at the park gift shop.
Tip: Check it is open on the day. If it is shut, New Norfolk has bakeries on the way through.

Before you go
- Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
- Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
- On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
