Getting there

Walk from Salamanca. A city bus can bring you back, and it is free until 30 June 2027.

Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Arthur Circus~15 min at the stop

A round green among cottages. The real Battery Point starts here, not at the Salamanca stalls.

Worth knowing: The circus is a rare ring of Georgian cottages around an oval green, laid out in the 1840s for officers and officials at Battery Point.

Tip: It is a residential street. Look, then move on. Do not photograph people in their windows.

  2. 2. Hampden Road~25 min at the stop

Lanes down to Kelly's Steps and the waterfront. Drop to the water, then turn inland to the rivulet instead of staying in the restaurant row.

Tip: Kelly's Steps are steep. With a pram, go around by the street. Jackman & McRoss is the bakery at 57 Hampden Road. Eat the scallop pie before the long walk to the Female Factory.

  3. 3. Cascades Female Factory~1 h 10 min at the stop

The convict women's factory. A ticket includes a tour. Even the yard from the street explains why you followed the rivulet.

Worth knowing: The factory ran from 1828 to 1856 on damp swampy ground, and overcrowding and disease killed many women and babies. Three of the original five yards survive, the only female factory in Australia with remains like these.

Tip: Daily until about 4:30 pm. Ask at the gate for the last tour.

  4. 4. Cascade Brewery gardens~25 min at the stop

The white brewery on the rivulet, with the mountain behind it. You can see the grounds from the gate without a tour. The brewhouse is tour-only.

Tip: If you want inside, book the tour ahead. Otherwise finish by the creek and take the bus back to town.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
