Getting there

G:link to Burleigh Heads, then walk the headland. 50 cents.

Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Jellurgal~30 min at the stop

The Aboriginal cultural centre at the foot of the headland, 1711 Gold Coast Highway. Yugambeh guides lead walks from here, such as the two-hour Jellurgal Walkabout. Start with the place, not the lifeguard tower.

Worth knowing: Jellurgal is the Yugambeh name for Burleigh Head, the Dreaming Mountain, and the centre tells the Dreaming story of how the headland was made.

Tip: Book guided walks ahead on the centre's website. If it's closed, read the signs outside and head up the headland.

  2. 2. Burleigh Head~45 min at the stop

A small national park above the north and south bays. Surfers check the swell from here, not the casino skyline.

Tip: The headland loop is about 40 minutes. On a windy day stay on the track, off the edge.

  3. 3. Tallebudgera Creek~50 min at the stop

The mouth where families swim the calm water while the outer beach has the flags down. This is the local midday.

Tip: Swim the creek, not the boat channel. After rain the flow is stronger. Currumbin Rock Pools are up the valley if you still have daylight and it has not just poured.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
