Cairns Airport is 10 minutes from the centre. From 23 November 2026 Translink bus 100 runs to Cairns City and the Lagoon every 30 minutes, 4am to 10:30pm, for 50 cents. Before that it is a taxi or a shuttle: taxis pay an airport access fee of A$4 (A$5 for an international terminal pick-up).
Stops in order
The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.
1. Cairns Aquarium~2 h at the stop
An aquarium of the reef and Queensland's rainforest, a block from the waterfront at 5 Florence Street. Daily shark and ray feeds and a touch pool.
Worth knowing: Opened in 2017, it holds more than 15,000 animals across 10 ecosystems and houses the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
Tip: Open 9:30am to 3:30pm, last entry 2:30pm. Tickets from A$61, cheaper online.

2. Muddy's Playground~40 min at the stop
The free council playground on the Esplanade, with water play and shade sails.
Tip: For under-sixes this is the best thing on the waterfront. There is a cafe and toilets right next to it.

3. Cairns Esplanade Lagoon~1 h at the stop
A huge free saltwater-edge pool with sandy borders right by the sea. Central Cairns has no swimming beach, so locals use this year-round.
Worth knowing: In 2026 the Lagoon closed for its two-yearly works from 13 July to 16 August.
Tip: Open 6am to 9pm, on Wednesdays from noon only, for maintenance. Nobody swims in the sea off the Esplanade: it is mudflat, croc and stinger water.

4. Reef Fleet Terminal~20 min at the stop
The terminal the reef boats and Green Island ferries leave from in the morning. Quiet by day; at sunset the boardwalk looks across Trinity Inlet to the ranges.
Tip: If you are going out to the reef tomorrow, find your operator's desk now; the morning is a crowd.

Before you go
- Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
- Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
- On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
