Getting there
Trains leave Cairns station on Bunda Street at 8:45am and 9:30am (Freshwater 9:10 and 9:55); arrive 30 minutes early. Until 1 November 2026, because of upgrade works, Skyrail only runs a Kuranda to Barron Falls loop, Wednesday to Sunday, so come back down on the 2:45pm or 3:30pm train. From November the cableway again descends to Smithfield terminal in northern Cairns, with taxis or the Skyrail hotel shuttle from there.

1. Cairns station~30 min at the stop
The Kuranda Scenic Railway: 37 km into the range, 15 tunnels and 55 bridges. Heritage class is A$58 one way, A$87 return.
Tip: The train makes a short stop at the Barron Falls lookout. Fares hold until 31 March 2027.

2. Freshwater station~5 min at the stop
The second boarding station, in suburban Cairns. From here the train starts its climb up the range.
Tip: If you are staying on the Northern Beaches, boarding here is easier than going into the city.

3. Kuranda station~15 min at the stop
A heritage station in a tropical garden. The train arrives at 10:40am or 11:25am and heads back at 2:45pm and 3:30pm.
Worth knowing: Over 37 km the line climbs 327 metres.
Tip: The village is a 10-minute walk uphill by steps and the riverside path.

4. Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets~1 h at the stop
The market under the rainforest canopy in the village centre: crafts, coffee, juices and honey.
Tip: Have lunch here: you have 2 to 3 hours if you go down on Skyrail.

5. Kuranda Koala Gardens~45 min at the stop
A small wildlife park at the Heritage Markets: koalas, kangaroos and lizards. A$24 adult, A$12 child, open 9:30am to 4pm.
Tip: Family ticket A$60 for two adults and two children. Patting a koala for a souvenir photo costs extra and spots are limited: ask at the entrance.

6. Barron Falls (Din Din)~20 min at the stop
A Skyrail mid-station with a boardwalk to lookouts over the gorge and Barron Falls.
Tip: From 19 August to 1 November 2026 Skyrail only runs a Kuranda to Barron Falls loop, Wednesday to Sunday, with limited capacity. After that the line runs to Smithfield again, but upgrades continue until late 2027: check days and times at skyrail.com.au.

7. Skyrail Smithfield Terminal~15 min at the stop
The cableway's bottom station on the northern edge of Cairns. A one-way Skyrail ticket is A$74, return A$111.
Worth knowing: At 7.5 km over Barron Gorge National Park, it was the world's longest gondola cableway when it opened in 1995.
Tip: A train plus Skyrail combo with city transfers is simpler than booking the pieces separately.
