Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Howard Smith Wharves~45 min at the stop

Restored 1930s wharves right under the Story Bridge: Felons Brewing Co., bars and riverside restaurants beneath the steel trusses.

Worth knowing: The wharves were built in the 1930s under the Story Bridge, sat quiet for decades, and reopened in 2018.

Tip: Grab a riverside table at Felons for golden hour: the bridge lights come on at dusk.

  2. 2. Customs House~10 min at the stop

The 1889 copper-domed Customs House: one of the best evening angles on the Story Bridge across the river.

Tip: The facade and the river lawn are free. The restaurant inside takes a booking. The lawn view is enough for the walk.

  3. 3. Eagle Street riverfront~10 min at the stop

The CBD's business riverfront: the new widened Riverwalk opened in early 2026 while the Waterfront Brisbane precinct builds out to 2028.

Tip: Expect some construction hoarding: path sections can shift, follow the signage.

  4. 4. City Botanic Gardens at twilight~25 min at the stop

The gardens stay open 24 hours: lit avenues, giant fig canopies and possums emerging after dark.

Worth knowing: The city gardens were established in 1855 on a former creek flat by the river, and still hold a remnant of the original riverside forest.

Tip: Keep to the lit riverside path: it leads straight to the Kangaroo Point Bridge.

  5. 5. Kangaroo Point Bridge~10 min at the stop

The 460 m cable-stayed footbridge (opened December 2024): mid-span views of the CBD, the river and the lit Story Bridge.

Tip: This is the river crossing. Sunset is better from the Kangaroo Point cliffs above the bridge, if you are willing to climb.

  6. 6. Kangaroo Point Cliffs lookout~25 min at the stop

Brisbane's classic night panorama from the basalt cliffs: the whole CBD mirrored in the black river.

Tip: Climbers train on the floodlit cliffs below most evenings: fun to watch from above.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
