McLaren Vale is about 45 minutes by car from the city. You need a sober driver; South Australia's limit is 0.05. Without a car, join a group winery tour.

Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

A five-storey glass 'Rubik's cube' in the vines: exhibition, tasting room and restaurant. Entry A$20; the tasting room is open daily 10:30 to 16:30.

Worth knowing: The building opened in 2017 on an estate the Osborn family has run since 1912.

  3. 3. Port Willunga~1 h at the stop

A beach below ochre cliffs with caves dug by fishermen and the stumps of an old jetty.

Worth knowing: In 1888 the barque Star of Greece was wrecked here, just a couple of hundred metres offshore. Its remains still lie on the seabed, and the cafe on the clifftop carries its name.

Tip: The best sunset around; keep well back from the cliff edge.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
