Getting there

From central Adelaide, allow about 1 hour 15 minutes by car to Tanunda. You need a sober driver: South Australia's limit is 0.05, and zero for P and L plate drivers. Without one, a group wine tour from the city is the easier option.

Stops in order

The text version of the route: stops, time at each and the legs between them. Times are estimates, without queues, traffic or swims.

  1. 1. Whispering Wall~20 min at the stop

The Barossa Reservoir dam near Williamstown, on the way up from the city. Its curved wall carries a whisper from one end to the other.

Worth knowing: The dam was completed in 1902; a whisper carries almost 140 metres.

Tip: Stand at opposite ends and speak quietly into the concrete.

Worth knowing: The shop stands on Pheasant Farm, where Maggie and Colin Beer bred pheasants in the 1970s; their farm restaurant made Maggie one of Australia's best-known cooks.

Before you go

  • Route times are estimates: walking, driving and a sensible pause at each stop. Add queues, traffic and swims yourself.
  • Prices, timetables and trail status change. Check the venue's official site and the state transport app before you go.
  • On beaches, swim only between the red and yellow flags. Use sun protection even when it is cloudy.
